Question

A helical gear with 20° pressure angle and 30° helix angle mounted at the midspan of a shaft that is supported between two bearings at the ends. The nature of the stresses induced in the shaft is

Options :

  1. normal stress due to bending only

  2. normal stress due to bending in one plane and axial loading: shear stress due to torsion

  3. normal stress due to bending in two planes and axial loading: shear stress due to torsion

  4. normal stress due to bending in two planes ; shear stress due to torsion

Show Answer

Answer :

normal stress due to bending in two planes and axial loading: shear stress due to torsion

Solution :

ϕ = pressure angle
ψ = helix angle
i) FT i.e. Tangential force ii) FR i.e. Radial force iii) Fa i.e. Axial force .
Fa induces axial stress in the shaft
FT and FR are responsible for bending of shaft in two plane.
Due to FT tangential shear stress will be induced in the shaft.
