Question

Two generators have cost functions F1 and F2 . Their incremental-cost characteristics are

d F 1 d P 1 = 40 + 0.2 P 1 and d F 2 d P 2 = 32 + 0.4 P 2

They need to deliver a combined load of 260 MW. Ignoring the network losses, for economic operation, the generations P1 and P2 (in MW) are

Options :

  1. P1=P2=130

  2. P1=160 ,P2=100

  3. P1=140,P2=120

  4. P1=120,P2=140

Show Answer

Answer :

P1=160 ,P2=100

Solution :

Total delivering power is

P1 + P2 = 260 MW .....(1)

The incremental cost of Generator-1 is

I C 1 = d F 1 d P 1 = 40 + 0.2 P 1

The incremental cost of Generator-2 is

I C 2 = d F 2 d P 2 = 32 + 0.4 P 2

For the optimum cost, the incremental cost of each generator must be equal.

IC1 = IC2

⇒ 40 + 0.2 P1 = 32 + 0.4 P2

⇒ 0.2 P1 - 0.4 P2 = - 8 .....(2)

By solving equations (1) and (2), we get

P1 = 160 MW

P2 = 100 MW
