Question
Which of the following heat treatment processes is/are used for surface hardening of steels?
Options :
Carburizing
Cyaniding
Annealing
Carbonitriding
Answer :
Carburizing
,Cyaniding
,Carbonitriding
Solution :
Heat treatment process used for surface hardening of steels
Carburizing : Carburizing is a heat treatment process in which iron or steel absorbs carbon while the metal is heated in the presence of a carbon-bearing material, such as charcoal or carbon monoxide. The intent is to make the metal harder.
Cyaniding : Cyaniding is a case-hardening process that is fast and efficient; it is mainly used on low-carbon steels. The part is heated to 871–954 °C (1600–1750 °F) in a bath of sodium cyanide and then is quenched and rinsed, in water or oil, to remove any residual cyanide.
Carbonitriding : Carbonitriding is a metallurgical surface modification technique that is used to increase the surface hardness of a metal, thereby reducing wear. During the process, atoms of carbon and nitrogen diffuse interstitially into the metal, creating barriers to slip, increasing the hardness and modulus near the surface.
